Rules of the Game: 2024 Labor & Employment Law Update
Pamela J. Bourne and Ashley H. Connell, Attorneys, Woods Aitken
Employers have been juked playing defense against labor and employment law changes over the last year. While many of these changes may seem like a technical foul against employers, we’re here to assist you with some proactive strategies to help you win. This presentation will address recent Supreme Court rulings, legislative updates, and agency regulations and decisions.

9:05 AM
Avoid Turnovers: NLRB Updates that Promote Unionization
Jerry L. Pigsley and Sarah L. Carstensen, Attorneys, Woods Aitken
The National Labor Relations Board has continued overruling Trump-era precedent, issuing decisions aimed at promoting unionization (e.g., reviving the 2014 “Quickie” election rules), and changing federal labor law over 50 years old.  These recent decisions and rules create newfound legal risks and uncertainty for employers. Learn how to avoid having officials call flagrant fouls on your team.

Slam Dunk for Employees: Employers Obligations under the Secure Act
Julia M. Vander Weele, Attorney, Spencer Fane
The SECURE Act 2.0 of 2022 followed its predecessor, the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act, to make some of the most sweeping changes in the rules governing 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), and defined benefit plans in decades. This presentation will cover new rules permitting matching and profit-sharing contributions to be treated as Roth (or after-tax) amounts, new optional in-service distribution options, additional changes to the required minimum distribution rules, and the opportunity to tie matching contributions to student loan payments.

11:15 AM
Full-Court Press: Are You Prepared for Employment-Based Inspections?
Erin L. Ebeler, Attorney, Woods Aitken
The Men in Black and White Stripes with Whistles are at the door...oops, we mean OSHA Compliance & Safety Officers and/or Department of Labor Investigators. Instead of calling fouls, though, they are looking for safety violations, misclassification issues, and the failure to properly pay workers. Are you ready? This presentation will help identify steps that your company should take now to take your game plan to the next level as well as action items to consider once you receive notice of a DOL audit or OSHA inspection.
