Community Involvement

At Woods & Aitken, serving the community means more than just providing outstanding legal services - it means active involvement. The Firm, as well as each attorney, is committed to making the Denver, Colorado; Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska; and Washington D.C. communities better places to work, live and raise a family. We are equally dedicated to improving the legal profession, as well as the industries in which we actively practice each day.

The number of community, industry and professional boards and organizations upon which our attorneys serve is too large to feature and growing each day. Learn more about the Firm's community involvement the next time you speak with one of our attorneys or e-mail a specific question to Jennifer Strand.

About the Bicycle: The bicycle shown here was purchased by Woods & Aitken as part of the Lincoln Arts Council's Tour de Lincoln fundraising campaign. It's one of the many ways the Firm and its members invest in the communities we serve.

Woods & Aitken Among Top Campaign for Hunger Donors

Woods & Aitken LLP was among the top ten fund donors to the Food Bank of Lincoln’s 2009 Campaign Against Hunger, and only one of three law firms to make the Food Bank’s top donor lists in either the food or fund donations categories. In addition to accounting for nearly three-fourths of the funds donated by the 13 law firms that participated, the Food Bank will turn Woods & Aitken’s donation into over $15,000 worth of food for the area’s hungry.

“While there are so many vital efforts to help better our community, feeding the hungry is a core need that deserves our full attention and effort,” said Vickie Starr, who, along with Jodi Schmidt, coordinates the Campaign for the Firm each year. “When a person is hungry, nothing else matters except finding the next meal.”

Woods & Aitken - Lincoln Proud Co-Sponsor of Blue Man Group

In what will be the legendary group’s first appearance in Lincoln, Blue Man Group will bring its groundbreaking performance to the Lied Center for Performing Arts. The Lincoln office of Woods & Aitken LLP is proud to co-sponsor what the Lied Center calls a “fast and furious theatrical extravaganza…an explosion of comedy, music and technology.”

Jennifer Strand, a partner in the Lincoln office and head of the Firm’s charitable contributions committee, said, “In many ways, support for the Arts tells you a lot about a community.  We’re excited to co-sponsor Blue Man Group because the performance reflects the same kind of energy, innovation and spirit we see in Lincoln everyday.”

Woods & Aitken LLP encourages everyone to support the Arts, and to not miss what The New York Times haled as “one of the most delightful performance pieces ever staged.” Learn more about Blue Man Group’s Lincoln appearance.

Evnen Reelected to Nebraska State Board of Education

With the mid-January 2009 swearing-in before the legislature, Robert Evnen, a partner with Woods & Aitken, began his second term as a member of the Nebraska State Board of Education. Evnen began his tenure as the District 1 representative in 2005, through an appointment by Governor Dave Heineman. The Board is the primary policy-making, evaluating, and planning entity for Nebraska’s PreK – 12 school programs.

“The future for Nebraska’s young people is filled with both rewards and challenges,” said Evnen, who ran for his latest term without opposition. “We have to maintain the balance that exists between the value of new technologies and educational experiences with the fundamental building blocks of learning and the budget realities of today.”

Woods & Aitken Supports Lincoln Libraries/Leaders are Readers Program

Ed Tricker, a partner at Woods & Aitken and Lincoln City Libraries Board of Trustees president, read at Preschool Storytime at Bennett Martin Public Library as part of the Leaders are Readers program. Leaders are Readers is a program of the Foundation for Lincoln City Libraries in which business and community leaders read at one of the Lincoln City Libraries Preschool Storytimes to show their commitment to early childhood literacy and to support the role of public libraries in promoting reading, learning and discovery by making a donation to the Foundation. Preschool Storytime is a fun half-hour of reading aloud and related activities for children ages three, four and five presented free of charge. More than 13,000 children participate in preschool storytime at Lincoln City Libraries each year. Donations to Leaders are Readers help support Lincoln City Libraries’ program and services.
